CALGARY, Alberta – When Sergio Grant wants a snack or lunch while at work, he doesn’t duck out to a foodcourt, a coffee shop, or even to the vending machine in the kitchen at his office. Instead, the 37 year old Technical Sales Manager at a Calgary-based oilfield service company need only visit a meeting room shortly after a meeting to make out like a bandit with leftover goodies.
According the Sergio, the trick is to be in good with all of the Administrative Assistants in the company, of which there are 4 at Bootstrap Energy Services.
I’ve been doing this for some time now, and I have to say, I have a system that works quite well. So basically, I have an arrangement with all of the AAs to send me a text message and email with the date, time, duration, and room # of every meeting where there’s going to be food. Armed with that info, I start inconspicuously hanging around the meeting room within 15 minutes of the meeting end time. Once the meeting is over, I swoop in for the leftovers before they are brought to an area kitchen. It’s great.
Many of Sergio’s colleagues claim that he has been known to dash out of meeting rooms with 2 or 3 trays of leftovers. Any food that he cannot finish shortly after the meeting are put into a private, secured, mini-fridge tucked next to his desk for safe keeping.
I haven’t spent a dime on lunches or snacks in over 38 months now. I estimate that this has saved me $5000 over that period. A big bonus is when I can snag leftovers from a breakfast meeting, because that’s when I score the top-shelf breakfast sandwiches and wraps. Those little guys are also excellent at lunch time.
On a more serious note, it was brought to this reporter’s attention that Sergio has been known to take food from the fridges in various kitchens throughout his office – food that does not belong to him.
As much as I hate to admit it, there are times when I am away from the office, or all of the food gets eaten up at the meeting. During these desparate times I have to resort to basically stealing food from the company fridges.
On more than a few occasions his colleages have left notes on the fridge expressing their discontent with their food going AWOL.
Sergio claims to not pay too much attention to the flack since he has saved over $5,000 in the past 3 years.
